The Pacific University women's lacrosse team overcame a four-goal halftime deficit to defeat Wartburg, 12-9 on Wednesday night.
The Boxers (1-0) made a winner of first-year head coach
Brittany Hartmann in her first game as the head coach of her alma mater.
The Knights (1-1), who are traveling through the Northwest from Iowa, were led by a five-goal effort by Ashlyn Jelinek in the loss.
"Today was a great team win," said Hartmann. "We were down by four at half time and came back to score nine goals in the second half next to Wartburg's two. I am incredibly proud of everyone. They laid it all out there tonight."
Pacific got on the board first when lacrosse newcomer
Mackenzie Brown scored nearly three minutes into the game before Jelinek put Wartburg ahead with back-to-back goals for the early lead. Later in the half, back-to-back goals by
Alexa Erickson and
Madisen Castro tied the game with 8:55 left in the opening half before Wartburg scored four goals in the final 7:30 of the opening half for a 7-3 halftime lead.
Four-straight goals by
Roya Tahmassebi – three of which were assisted by Erickson tied the game at 7 and for the second time in the contest. Then, Erickson put Pacific ahead when she scored her second unassisted goal of the night with 18:15 left in the contest. The two teams traded goals, including the fifth goal of the night by Jelinek with 11:00 left to play.
Then, Pacific took over controlling the possession and getting stellar play from its freshman goalkeeper
Madyson Ivey, who was making her first start between the posts. Back to back goals by Erickson within nearly a 30-second span put Pacific up by two before
Hannah Reulbach added one last goal with 4:46 for the final margin.
Hartmann showered praise across the lineup in the win. "I am especially proud of Madyson. She had an amazing first game as a freshman goalie. That position is not easy and she took it like a champ." Ivey finished the game with eight saves. "
Alexa Erickson brought the fire and earned the Boxer Player of the Game Award with four goals and three assists. Kenzie Brown as a first-year player completely blows me away."
The Boxers will now turn their direction towards another non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Mar. 13 when they Ohio Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium.
