Boxers Come Up Short in 3-1 Loss to Pacific Lutheran

The two teams combined to leave 23 runners on base but it was a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth that proved to be the difference as Pacific Lutheran posted a 3-1 win over Pacific on Sunday in Tacoma.

The Boxers (19-15, 11-8 NWC), who had to wait a day to begin the series, were led by a two-hit day each from Ian Blair and Drew Fagerness but the Boxers left 10 runners on base in the loss.

The Lutes (19-12, 11-8 NWC) moved into a tie for fourth in the conference standings with the win were led by a three-hit game by Andy Schmitz.

Pacific got on the board in the third inning with three-straight, two-out singles including a RBI single by Ryan Krout for the early lead. Pacific Lutheran tied it in the fourth inning on a Dominick Zombik single, scoring Schmitz, who led off the inning with a single. The Lutes took their first lead of the day when Michael Cesar doubled in a run, scoring Jacob Bockelie from first, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Then, the Lutes picked up an insurance run in the sixth.

PLU starter Justin Armbruester went seven solid innings, scattering six hits and striking out 13 in the win to improve to 5-1. Alex Gregory pitched two innings of two-hit relief for his fifth save for the Lutes.

Boxers' starter Casey Brown was the losing pitcher, falling to 4-2 after a six-inning outing with three more strikeouts.

Weather forced the postponement of game two. The series will resume with a doubleheader on Monday at 11 a.m.
