Linfield Takes Two from Pacific Softball on Senior Day

No. 9 Linfield won a doubleheader against the Pacific University softball team, winning game one, 5-4 and game two, 10-2 in six innings.

Pacific honored its seniors – Amanda Machado and Kaitlynn Donaca – between games of the doubleheader.

The Boxers (23-11, 17-6 NWC) started the day with its ninth one-run game of the season. Pacific outhit Linfield by a 9-8 margin as Jill Uyeda, Montana Vaught and Nicole Martinez each had two hits in the loss.

Pacific found itself down early 2-0 as the visitors scored twice in the top of the first. The Boxers took its first lead of the day, scoring three runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Hailey Miller led off the inning, doubling to the gap in left-center field. Then, Uyeda singled to left field, advanced to second on the throw and moved pinchrunner Lilly Meek to third. After a pop out, the Boxers plated their first run of the day with a Taylor Nishimura RBI single. Next, pinch hitter Amanda Machado singled to center field, scoring Uyeda from third to tie the game at 2. After a strike out, the Boxers loaded the bases on a Nicole Martinez single. The Boxers went ahead when an alert Nishimura scored on a passed ball for the third run of the inning.

Pacific added to its lead with a run in the fifth on a RBI single by Uyeda, who brought in Montana Vaught, who doubled to lead off the inning.

Facing a two-run deficit, Linfield scored three runs on two hits to regain the lead in the seventh. Then, the Wildcats retired the Boxers in order in the seventh to preserve the win.

Game two saw Linfield take an early 9-0 lead in the first three innings. The Boxers cut into the lead, scoring twice in the fourth inning. Pacific picked up a RBI single by Rylee Patton and a sacrifice fly by Machado to account for the two runs. The Wildcats got a run back with a solo home run in the fifth.

The nightcap saw six-different Boxers record a hit in the loss.

Next, Pacific will travel to Whitworth for a four-game series. The Boxers and Pirates will begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday, April 19 at noon.
