A back and forth contest was not decided until the 10
th inning as George Fox rallied for a 6-5 win over the Pacific University baseball team on Saturday.
The Boxers (18-13, 10-6) were led by a three-hit game from
Chase Anderson and
Derek Legeza en route to a 12-hit effort.
The Bruins (19-10, 13-6) also had 12 hits with Matt Voelzke, Kyler Brudwick, Sam Swenson and Jason Garcia each leading the attack with two hits.
Three-straight singles including a RBI single by Drew Fagernees with two out in the bottom of the first put the host Boxers ahead 1-0. Then, Pacific added to its lead with three runs on four hits in the second inning. Two of the runs came in on a two-RBI single by
Ian Blair and a double play by the Bruins kept the Boxers from adding more to its lead.
A three-run fifth – two of which came in on a two-run home run by Matt Ramirez – cut the deficit to 4-2. An unearned run, later in the inning, made it a one-run game, 4-3. The Bruins took their first lead of the day with a two-out, two-RBI single by Colby Watilo for a 5-4 lead.
To lead off the ninth inning, Anderson tripled to right field against reliever Matt Voelzke. Then,
Dustin Meyer grounded out to shortstop, scoring Anderson to tie the game at 5.
The Bruins managed to load the bases in the 10
th, capitalizing on a Pacific error they were able to plate a run which proved to be the difference.
The two teams started game two of the nightcap before rain halted play in the fifth inning.
