Boxers Pick Up 2-0 Win Over Evergreen State

The Pacific University women's soccer team scored a pair of first half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Evergreen State on Friday night.

The Boxers (2-1), who won back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 17 and 18, 2016, managed to outshoot the visitors by a 10-8 margin.

The Geoducks (2-1) moved Colbi Stewart from her starting midfield spot to goalkeeper for the contest.

Pacific challenged the first-time goalkeeper in the opening minute when Karla Herrera-Zarate played a ground through ball to an open Lydia King, who put a one touch on it for the early goal. It was the first career goal for the Hillsboro native and her first points of the 2019 season.

With a 1-0 lead, it was a stingy defense anchored by goalkeeper Saya Brown, who kept the visitors off the scoreboard. The junior goalie made four saves to keep the clean sheet alive and her offensive teammates gave her its second goal of the half when sophomore Emma Gusman scored her second goal of the season from 30 yards out in the 28th minute.

Brown made two more saves in the final 45 minutes for her second career shutout and first of the young season. For the contest, Brown made seven saves.

Next, Pacific will travel to Linfield on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in McMinnville at 7 p.m. to begin Northwest Conference play.
