Despite a .153 to .139 advantage in hitting percentage, host Whitworth managed to post a 25-19, 17-25, 28-26, 26-24 win over the Pacific University volleyball team on Friday in Spokane.
The Boxers (9-4, 2-1 NWC) also had a 53-42 advantage in kills as they saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end in the loss. Three players for Pacific -
Jordan Zweifel (14),
Karlee Duncan (13) and
Nanea Lum (10) - had double digit kills in the loss. Lum added 13 digs for her first double double of the season and second of her career.
Also for Pacific,
Makenna Mahuna had 45 assists, six digs, two aces and two block assists; plus
Haley Walz had a team-high 25 digs.
The Pirates (10-4, 4-0 NWC) were led by the reigning NWC Offensive Player of the Week Emiko Kahler, who had a team-high 15 kills on 51 swings. Kahler also added a team-high 16 digs for a double double. Plus, a pair of key statistics in favor of Whitworth in the match were that they recorded seven service aces and 13 blocks in the win.
The match was tightly contested over the four sets as the score was tied on 36 occasions and the lead exchanged hands on 16 occasions.
Next up for Pacific is a matchup at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Whitman in Walla Walla, Washington. The Boxers have won the last five meetings against the Blues.
