A last-second 3-pointer by Stellan Roberts of Puget Sound spoiled a comeback effort by the Pacific University men's basketball team on Friday night en route to an 89-87 win.
The Boxers (4-9, 1-3 NWC) had taken a one-point lead, following a 3-point play by
Marcus Wallace with just under two seconds to play. Wallace put-back attempt and free throw on a missed free throw by
Davis Holly had put Pacific ahead 87-86.
The Loggers (7-5, 1-2 NWC) set up the game-winning shot after Pacific had deflected the ball out of bounds with just under a second to go. On the ensuing in-bounds play, C.J. Geathers found Roberts for the game-winning shot just before the buzzer.
Pacific was able to land four players in double figures including
Davis Holly, who had a team-high 19 points. Joining him in double figures were
Andy Isokpehi (15 points),
Nick Drynan (12 points) and
Marcus Wallace (11 points).
Roberts led the host Loggers with a game-high 25 points, who had three players in double figures. Plus, Jourdan Joseph and Cal Hansen added 21 and 11 points in the win.
The visitors built a lead as large as 13 in the first 20 minutes until a 16-4 run by Puget Sound put the host Loggers ahead 67-66 and for the first time since the opening three minutes of the game. The two teams traded the lead back and for the remainder of the contest. Neither team would be able to build a lead larger than four.
The Loggers had a four-point lead with under a minute to play when Holly hit his third 3-pointer of the game to cut the deficit to one, 82-81 with :50 to play. Twice, Puget Sound had built a three-point lead until the heroics in the final seconds.
Isokpehi cut the deficit to one, 84-83, with a layup with :11 left to play; then the Roberts drained a pair of free throws to stretch the margin back to three, 86-83 with :08 to go. After back-to-back fouls on the Loggers sent Holly to the free-throw line to set the stage for an exciting last two seconds.
Next, Pacific will host Whitman on Friday, January 17 at 8 p.m. at the Stoller Center.
