For the second time on the season, the Pacific University women's basketball team was giant killers as they knocked off a nationally-ranked team as they defeated No. 7 (WBCA)/No. 8 (D3hoops) Whitman, 65-64 on Friday night in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (11-3, 5-0 NWC) extended its winning streak to seven, leading the final 1:11 of the game en route to the win. Trailing for nearly the entire contest, Pacific freshman
Kaylssa Kleinschmit (Mount Angel, Oregon) defied the scouting report and hit her first 3-pointer of the game – third of the season – to put the home team in front, 63-62 and for the first time on the evening.
After taking the lead, Pacific managed to force three turnovers and limit the nationally-ranked Blues to just two free throws to seal the win. One of the three turnovers was when Boxers' freshman
Rilee Price stepped up in front of a pass to keep the visitors from getting off a last-second shot attempt.
"I am very proud of this team and battling threw a lot of obstacles this season," said Pacific head coach Alecia Parker. "Every player on and off the court stepped up and was a huge part of the win tonight."
The story of the season continues to be that it is an all-around effort for Pacific with three players in double figures including junior
Courtney Carolan, who led all scorers with 22 points. She was joined in double digits by newcomers -
Brilie Kovaloff and
Alexis Intong, who had 14 and 11 points, respectively. Kleinschmit finished the game with nine points, plus the stat sheet is filled with other contributions including a four-steal, six-rebound effort from Carolan, a five point, four rebound, six assist and two steal effort from Price and nine rebounds from Intong.
For Whitman (12-2, 4-1 NWC), the Blues were led by a 22-point effort from reserve Kaylie McCracken. She was joined in double figures by Mady Burdett and Makana Stone, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively.
After finding itself behind 11-0 to start the game, the Boxers settled down and overcame a 35-25 halftime deficit in the win. It is the second-straight game that Pacific has come back from a double-digit deficit at halftime to come back and win. Last week at Puget Sound, the Boxers erased an 11-point Loggers' lead en route to a 62-57 overtime win.
Next, Pacific will host Whitworth on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Stoller Center.
