Hot Shooting Leads Pacific to 62-58 Win Over Willamette

The Pacific University women's basketball team raised its winning streak to nine games and remained atop the standings in the Northwest Conference with a 62-58 win over Willamette on Friday night.

The Boxers (13-3, 7-0 NWC) were led by a 24-point effort from Brilie Kovaloff (pictured; photo by Anna Kim) and 14 more from Camy Aguinaldo in the win. Pacific shot 56.5% from the field – its second highest effort on the season (56.7% vs. Whitworth, Jan. 18) – in the win.

The Bearcats (10-6, 4-3 NWC) were paced by Kassin Hopkins, who had 14 points and Drew Farmer added 13 points in the defeat.

Pacific built an early 9-2 lead to start the game, culminating in a 3-point play by Kovaloff in the opening four minutes of the contest. Later in the quarter on a pair of occasions the visitors rallied to cut the Boxers' lead to two but each threat was answered by the host Boxers.

The Boxers stretched the lead to as much as 10 in the second quarter as they scored the first five points of the quarter. The Boxers went into the halftime break with a 37-30 lead. In its nine-game winning streak, Pacific had lead at half in seven of the contests and for the season, the Boxers have led at the break in 12 of 16 games.

Another quick start to begin the third quarter put Pacific up by its biggest margin of the game with three-consecutive layups for its biggest lead of the night at 13, 43-30. The Boxers remained in front for the rest of the contest despite seeing the visitors cut the lead to two, 57-55 with 3:40 left to play.

Next, Pacific will make the trip on Saturday to face Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma at 4 p.m. The Boxers are looking for its first win at Olson Gymnasium since January 27, 2017.
