Boxers Take Two from Previously Undefated Hardin-Simmons

The recipe for success in the doubleheader sweep for the Pacific softball team was six runs on 10 hits to complement some early offense as they defeated previously unbeaten Hardin-Simmons, 6-1 and 6-4 in a neutral site doubleheader on Thursday in Marshall, Texas.

The Boxers (3-3) were led by junior Nicole Martinez, who had two hits each in both games. Martinez was one of three Boxers with multiple hits in the game one victory. Teammates junior Jill Uyeda and freshman Michelle Winfield each had two in the win.

Pacific built an early 3-0 leading, scoring once in the first and two more in the second for an early lead for starting pitcher senior Morgan Masters. With the lead, Masters limited the Cowgirls' to three hits, retiring the first 11 batters in order that she faced en route to the win.

After a solo home run by HSU in the fourth, Pacific added to its lead with three unearned runs in the sixth inning en route to the win.

The nightcap saw the Boxers score in the first three innings en route to an early 6-1 lead. The Boxers plated four in its half of the third inning.  Two of the four runs in the third inning came in on the first home run of the season by junior Montana Vaught.

In the win, Martinez, who has raised her batting average from .143 to .364, had her third-straight, multi-hit game.  Freshman Jayden Sykes also had a pair of hits for her first career multi-hit game as a Boxer.

Reigning Northwest Conference Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week Rylee Patton picked up her second win of the season, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and a strikeout. Sophomore Cheyenne Datan recorded the final two outs for the save.

Next, Pacific will face another American Southwest Conference foe, LeTourneau in a doubleheader on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CST) / 4:30 p.m. (PST) in Marshall, Texas.
