Pacific Loses Season Opener to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-1

Despite a 7-6 advantage in hits, the Pacific University baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday night.

The Boxers (0-1) were led by a three-hit effort from junior Ryan Krout in the loss. Plus, senior Dylan Morgan had his fourth career multi-hit game with a pair of hits.

The Mustangs (1-0) spread six hits among five players including leadoff batter Andrew Shults, who had a team-best two hits. Starting pitcher Justin Hull allowed six hits and struck out six, picking up the win.

After a scoreless first inning, CMS plated a run each over the next three innings to take a 3-0 lead off starting pitcher Sage Dunaway and reliever Trevor Quinn. In the top of the seventh, Krout led off the inning with a single for his second hit of the day. Then, Krout moved into scoring position on a ground out. After a Boxers' ground out, Dylan Morgan picked up his second hit of the afternoon with a double to right field to score Krout that cut the deficit to 3-1.

The RBI double ended the day for the CMS starter before the Boxers were unable to cut further into the deficit. An unearned run by the Mustangs in the bottom of the eighth stretched the lead back to three.

Pacific mounted a threat in the ninth and placed runners on first and second with one out against CMS closer Josh Cordova, who kept the Boxers off the scoreboard with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Next, the Boxers will face Whittier College in a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
