Hot Bats Carry Boxers to First Win of the Season

A four-run first inning and seven-run fourth inning propelled the Pacific University baseball team to its first win of the season with a 14-6 win over host La Verne on Sunday.

The Boxers (1-3) continued to swing the hot bats for the second-straight day as they recorded 12 hits in the win. Tanner Johnson and Chase Anderson each had three hits to lead the attack. Anderson also had three RBI and three runs scored and Jordan Hara drove in a team-high five in the win.

La Verne (3-1) was handed its first loss of the season despite a 12-hit effort and used eight-different pitchers in the contest.

Pacific jumped on the Leopards early with four runs in the first inning, two of which came in on a two-RBI double by Anderson for the early lead. Pacific added to its lead with a run in the second before La Verne got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Holding on to a 5-2 lead, 12 batters came to the plate in the fourth as the Boxers scored seven runs on just two hits. One of the two hits was a bases loaded, bases clearing and three-RBI double by Hara. Anderson and Johnson each drew bases loaded walks to add to the lead for the Boxers. A two-run fifth inning put the visitors ahead 14-3. La Verne scored three times in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.

Pacific used four pitchers in the win, including Gavin Bullock who pitched 3.2 innings of three hit relief. Bullock allowed an unearned run and struck out a batter for the win.

Next, the Boxers will host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at noon for the home opener.
