King's Late Winner Lifts Boxers Over Blues

WALLA WALLA, Wash.- Lydia King's (Senior/Hillsboro, OR) late game-winning goal lifted the Pacific University women's soccer team over Whitman, grabbing a 2-1 win on the road.

Pacific (4-6-1, 2-5-1 NWC) snaps a five-game winless streak and gain three more points in the Northwest Conference table. It was a very even contest as each team recorded 10 shots with five on target. The Boxers held the edge in corners with five while the Blues registered just two.

The visitors got off to the perfect start, scoring the opening goal in the 2nd minute when Nadya Ortiz found the back of the net after finishing off a beautiful delivery from Mikayla Farrow (Sophomore/Sparks, NV).

The Boxers' defense continued to impress, holding Whitman scoreless in the first half. Julianna Ventura (Junior/Pasco, WA) and Elizabeth Blair (Senior/Cottonwood, UT) proved be an excellent center back pairing, stifling any scoring chances for the hosts.

The game took quite the turn in the 62nd minute when Whitman's Esmeralda Galvan and Ivette Garcia-Gomez (Sophomore/Hillsboro, OR) were shown red cards and sent off. Both teams would be reduced to 10 players for the remainder of the match.

Just as Pacific thought they would see out the game and cruise to victory, the Blues netted an equalizer in the 77th minute through Chaney Heinbaugh.

The Boxers would show some fantastic resilience in the final 10 minutes, finding the winner in the 81st minute. Farrow provided some great service yet again and King took her scoring chance with confidence, scoring her second goal of the season to clinch the 2-1 win and give her team all three points.

By The Numbers
  • Catherine Corlett (Sophomore/Gilbert, AZ) made three saves in goal.
  • Emily Rutkowski (Junior/Mesa, AZ), Catalina Alvarado (Junior/Tucson, AZ), Ortiz, and King each tallied a shot on target.
