McMINNVILLE, Ore.- Savannah Grosse's (Senior/Lake Oswego, OR) first goal of the season proved to be decisive in the Pacific women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Linfield on Wednesday night.
It was a very even contest on a rainy evening in McMinnville, but Pacific (6-9-1, 4-8-1 NWC) created some great chances in the second half and eventually found the winning goal in the 71
st minute. Linfield (3-12-2, 2-10-1 NWC) were lively in the first half but the Boxers eventually grew into the game and started to dominate possession.
Pacific registered eight shots with five on target while the hosts managed seven shots but fired just one on frame.
The defensive backline of
Julianna Ventura (Junior/Pasco, WA),
Elizabeth Blair (Senior/Cottonwood, UT),
Catalina Alvarado (Junior/Tucson, AZ), and
Sequoia Gregory (Freshman/Eugene, OR) was excellent in their defensive roles to preserve their fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Boxers nearly opened the scoring around the 30-minute mark when
Emily Rutkowski (Junior/Mesa, AZ) and
Tessa Bretschieder (Freshman/Eugene, OR) each tested the Wildcats' goalkeeper and forced her into a save.
Both teams would go into halftime scoreless but the game would begin to open up in the second half.
In the 71
st minute, Alvarado made blistering run down the right flank before whipping a low cross into the penalty area. It would find the foot of Grosse who took her shot first time and laced it into the top corner to give her team the lead.
Some disciplined defending the rest of the way would earn Pacific all three points to take back to Forest Grove.
By The Numbers
- Catherine Corlett (Sophomore/Gilbert, AZ) was only tested once in the contest, making one save.
- Grosse led the attack with two shots on goal.
- Pacific snaps a two-game winless streak with their win today.
