SPOKANE, Wash.- The Pacific University men's basketball opened their season with a record-breaking performance, setting a new record for the most points scored in a game with their 155-125 win over Greenville University.
The previous record was set in 1990 when the Boxers scored 145 points against Warner Pacific
Whitworth was the host site for this historic contest, as four teams will be competing at the Whitworth Fieldhouse this weekend to tip-off the 2021-22 season.
Seven Boxers reached double-digit scoring with
Isaiah Africano (Junior/Pearl City, HI) leading the way with 26 points. The junior was 10-16 from the floor with five rebounds in his 16 minutes off the bench.
Cooper Rolfs (Freshman/Shoreline, WA) put on an excellent offensive display in his collegiate debut, racking up 24 points in just nine minutes. The Washington native felt comfortable in his home state going 12-16 from the field.
Mario Mora (Senior/Bend, OR) had a fantastic game to begin his senior campaign as he shot 50% (4-8) from three-point range. The point guard tallied 18 points with four assists.
Jacob Bolger (Junior/Portland, OR) poured in 16 points and
Lucas Winkler (Freshman/Portland, OR) would also enjoy a great beginning to his collegiate career with 18 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting night.
Trevon Ridley (Junior/Murrieta, CA) and
Ethan Chung (Junior/San Ramon, CA) would also reach double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.
How It Happened
The teams would trade buckets to start the contest but an 11-0 run would give the Boxers a 20-10 lead five minutes into the first half. Back-to-back baskets from Winkler and a dunk from Bolger would extend the lead to 15 points at the 10-minute mark.
Pacific would lead by as many as 27 points in the first half to take an 81-55 lead into the break in the high-scoring affair.
We would see more of the same in the second half as the Boxers would quickly see their lead increase to over 30 points behind a layup from Africano and back-to-back scores by Ridley. Pacific eclipsed the century mark just a few minutes into the second half.
The Boxers never took their foot off the gas as they continued to pour it on towards the end of the second half, increasing their lead to 37 points. The Boxers high-tempo style of play was too much for the Panthers and Pacific would improve to 1-0 on the young season.
