Looking to build off the confidence gained in the exhibition contest against Linfield the Pacific Boxers women's soccer team opened the 2021 spring season on the road against Willamette and the Boxers opened the season in electric fashion with a 3-2 double-overtime win.
Despite outshooting the Bearcats in the first half 7-4 the Boxers found themselves down at the half 2-1 and trailing early in the game was Willamette tallied the first goal of the contest just under three minutes into the contest. Boxers did get on the board in the first half with a
Karla Herrera-Zarate goal with the assist coming from
Savannah Grosse.
The game remained 2-1 until the Boxers with just under four minutes left in regulation tied the match in the 86th minute on an
Emma Gusman goal with the assist from
Mikayla Farrow. Tied at 2-2 the contest needed overtime to decide the outcome and after scoreless first overtime the Boxers broke through and
Katelyn Volchok pushed one to the back of the net for a game-winning goal with the assist from
Brooklyn Yano giving the Boxers the 3-2 win.
The win marks the first over Willamette for the Boxers since 2016 and the first win in a Northwest Conference season opener since 2016, also. With the win, the Boxers open the season 1-0.
Pacific continues the season on Wednesday, March 6th at 4:30 pm at home when they host fellow NWC team, Linfield.
