A battle on the court has grown to be expected when the Pacific volleyball team takes on George Fox and it was just that on Friday night as the spring season continued for both teams. Fourteen of the 17 matches between the Boxers and the Bruins needed four sets or more to decide the winner and Friday nights affair was one of those 14 going five sets with the Boxers taking the win 25-27, 25-23, 27-25, 15-25, 15-13.
Set one of the night was a see-saw affair as the lead changed hands constantly with no lead bigger than two until the Boxers put together a late 4-0 run to lead 23-20 but George Fox answered with seven of the last nine points of the set giving the Bruins set one 27-25.
Pacific saw an earlier deficit in set two falling behind 6-1 but a 5-0 run by the Boxers tied the set and it would remain tight the rest of the way all the way to a 25-23 set two Boxer win. The Boxers swung the advantage in the matchup their way in the third set claiming it with extra points 27-25. Set four was the only set of the night that was not a tight battle as George Fox took control of it and tied the match at two sets apiece winning the fourth set 25-15.
A fifth and decisive set would decide the winner on the night. Pacific worked to a 7-5 advantage in the fifth set leading the Bruins to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, George Fox put together a 4-0 run to take the lead but the Boxers answered with a 5-0 run to lead 12-9. Up 13-10, the Boxers saw the Bruins take another timeout, and out of that timeout it was Pacific that kept the momentum scoring the final two points to win the fifth set 15-13.
Jordan Zweifel had her third double-double in as many games this season tallying 17 kills and 15 digs, while
Nanea Lum was strong with 15 kills and seven digs.
Haley Walz was an anchor on defense at libero with 36 digs and had a pair of aces, while
Makenna Mahuna registered 35 assists and seven digs.
The win keeps the Boxers unbeaten this spring moving them to 3-0. Action continues for Pacific on Thursday, March 18th when they host Linfield.
