Volleyball Notches Win in Five-Set Battle at Willamette

After opening the season on Thursday night at home with a solid four-set win over Willamette the Pacific volleyball team was back on the floor Friday night against the Bearcats this time on the road.

While it was a change of scenery for the Boxers it was the same outcome a Boxer victory but this time the contest needed five sets to decide the winner. Teams traded sets on the way to the fifth set which the Boxers won 15-12 winning the match 3-2 (25-14, 16-25, 25-19, 15-25, 15-12).

The offense was spread out early for the Boxers in the contest as five different players registered a kill in the first nine points of the match leading to a 9-4 Pacific lead over the Bearcats in the first set. That lead in set one continued to grow as the Boxers went on to take the set 25-14. Despite two early aces by Terina DeFries in the second set it was Willamette taking the lead in the set and they used that lead to win set two 25-16.

Set three saw the Boxers double up Willamette 12-6 and Pacific would use that cushion to regain the advantage in the match winning the third set 25-19. The Bearcats answered in the fourth with a decisive 25-15 fourth set to force the fifth set.

In the fifth set the Boxers went up 7-2 but an 8-1 run by Willamette gave the Bearcats a 10-8 advantage. Boxers answered with three straight points to regain the lead at 11-10 and then teams traded points until a Rebecca Hall kill made it 13-12 Pacific leading to a Bearcats timeout. Out of the Willamette timeout the Boxers continued their momentum and finished the contest taking the fifth set 15-12.

A big double-double by Jordan Zweifel paced the Boxers on the night as she tallied 19 kills and recorded 31 digs. While Nanea Lum finished with 10 kills and 14 digs and Elika Unti added 10 kills. Shaianne Cambra helped set the offense in motion on the night with 40 assists and added 16 digs, while libero, Haley Walz tallied 22 digs and six aces. Claire Stipsits added 12 digs on the evening.

Boxers keep the spring 2021 season rolling along next week when they host George Fox on Friday, March 12th for a 6:00pm contest with JV game to follow.
