FOREST GROVE, Ore.- Tessa Bretschieder's impressive two-goal performance led the Pacific women's soccer team to a convincing 3-1 win over Warner Pacific (Ore.) Wednesday night inside Hanson Stadium.
The Boxers opened the scoring early in the first half before the Knights found an equalizer before the halftime whistle. Two second-half goals would give Pacific the cushion they needed to see out the contest and earn their first win of the season.
"We're happy to get a win at home," Head Coach
Steve Lucas said. "We need to learn how to win, especially at home. It was a grind and they did it and hopefully that will lead to good things in the future."
It was a very even game from start to finish as the Boxers narrowly out-shot their opposition (9-8). The hosts created much better chances, however, racking up six shots on target.
The Boxers threatened in the early minutes when
Emily Wiltshire (Junior/Eugene, OR) was sent through on goal, but the forward would drag her shot just wide of the post. The junior had another opportunity in the 16
thminute but the Warner Pacific goalkeeper would do well to parry the shot.
Tessa Bretschieder's (Freshman/Euguene, OR) first goal in the Red and Black was one to remember. In the 18
th minute, the freshman found some space on the edge of the box and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Boxers a 1-0 advantage.
After gaining some early momentum, the Boxers would allow the Knights to equalize in the 34
th minute. Warner Pacific won a free kick on the left side of the penalty area and delivered a dangerous ball into the six-yard box. The cross was mishandled by the Pacific keeper and eventually nodded home by Maddie Goss to level the score at 1-1.
The teams would go into halftime knotted up at 1-1 but the hosts would prove to be the dominant side for the following 45 minutes.
Pacific took the lead in the 62
nd minute when
Emma Gusman (Senior/Aiea, HI) did well to turn and fire a shot on goal. The shot was saved well by the Warner Pacific keeper, but the ball would fall to the foot of
Lydia King (Senior/Hillsboro, OR) who showed great composure to tuck her shot just inside the post to put the Boxers out in front 2-1.
Bretschieder put the game away in the 84
th minute when she tested her luck from distance. The forward's shot dipped under the crossbar yet again and doubled Pacific's lead.
The Boxers would easily see out the contest and improve to 1-0 on the young season.

- Ivette Garcia-Gomez (Sophomore/Hillsboro, OR) tallied an assist for her delivery prior to Bretschieder's first goal.
- Gusman led the way with two shots on goal, Wiltshire and King each added one shot on target.
- Peyton Seals (Junior/Longview, WA) earned the win in her first game starting between the posts. She made three saves as the outfield player would hold strong in goal.
