Boxers Earn Comfortable Victory Over Lions

FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University men's soccer team put in yet another dominant performance to defeat Multnomah University, picking up the 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.

"We are glad that the fellas were able to compete and get a great team win," said Head Coach Brandon Porter. "It's fun to watch this young group start to form an identity and grow and excel together. Alex Pasmann and Conor Barres showed great leadership helping us preserve the shutout and defend our home field. Tomorrow will be a great test that pushes us to our limits and sees how much we have learned so far."

The Boxers (3-1) opened the scoring in the 16th minute and a pair of second half goals would help the hosts cruise to a comfortable win over the Lions. Pacific fired 18 shots with 11 on target while holding the visitors to just one shot in the contest.

The defensive backline was excellent as the Boxers would earn their first clean sheet of the young season while preventing the Lions from registering a shot on target.

Cooper Sheakley (Freshman/Happy Valley, OR) nearly finished off a wonderful attacking move from the Boxers after Cade Taniguchi (Senior/Kula, HI) provided a lovely flick to the striker, but the freshman's shot would be struck right at the keeper.

Sheakley finally got the goal the he deserved in the 16th minute after he dispossessed a Lion defender and raced through on goal before slotting his chance into the back of the net to give his team an early 1-0 advantage.

Shortly after, Joey Musto (Junior/Makawao, HI) nearly netted the second goal of the game but his shot was well-saved by the Lions' goalkeeper.

The Boxers held a 1-0 going into the break and the hosts managed to find a second goal in the 54th minute.

Noah Edwards (Freshman/Honolulu, HI) quickly pounced on a misplaced pass by a Multnomah defender and capitalized on the opportunity with a tidy finish to double the lead and bag his second goal of the season.

In the 61st minute, Jericho Lara (Junior/Makawao/HI) worked to get some space in the penalty area and attempted to curl a shot from the left side of the box, but it would strike the post and clatter away.

Matthew Sailer (Freshman/Burbank, CA) got in on the action in the 84th minute with a headed effort from point blank range, but his attempt was miraculously parried away by the keeper.

The Boxers put the game away in the 87th minute when Conor Juric (Freshman/Mission Viejo, CA) did well to create a scoring chance for Aidan Heflin (Freshman/Taoss, NM), who lashed a left-footed strike into the back of the net to seal the 3-0 score line.

By The Numbers
  • The Boxers' 18 shots was a season high, dominating the run of play.
  • Pacific won 12 corner kicks, also a season high.
  • Zachary Aderinto (Freshman/Kailua-Kona, HI) and Connor Matto (Sophomore/Beaverton, OR) split time between the posts and combined for the team's first clean sheet of the season.
