Boxers Suffer 3-0 Defeat to Lutes

FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University men's soccer team fell to the reigning Northwest Conference champions, Pacific Lutheran, Sunday afternoon at Hanson Stadium. The Lutes put in a solid performance to earn three points and the 3-0 win.

The visitors scored early to take a 1-0 lead into halftime and scored twice in the final 45 minutes to cruise to victory.

The Boxers (3-3-1, 0-1-1 NWC) struggled to keep possession against the talented opposition and managed just four shots in the contest. Pacific Lutheran (5-2-0, 2-0-0 NWC) showed their class, enjoying majority of the possession and while firing 15 shots with eight on target.

Cris Lozano got his team on the board in the 13th minute when his shot with the outside of his right boot found the bottom corner. The Lutes looked dangerous in the early minutes, but were unable to double their lead before the break.

Noah Edwards (Freshman/Honolulu, HI) was presented with Pacific's best chance of the day when he was sent through on goal, but the forward lost his footing before he could apply the finishing touch.

Pacific Lutheran doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Craig Johnson did well to create some space for himself and lashed his shot just inside to the post to make it 2-0.

Shortly after the second goal, the Lutes were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Luis Rojas-Celis (Freshman/Redwood City, CA) stepped up to save the spot kick and keep the Boxers within striking distance.

Johnson capped off his excellent performance in style with his acrobatic volley in the 65th minute to put the game to bed and seal the 3-0 score line.

By The Numbers

  • Rojas-Celis made three saves in goal
  • Cooper Sheakley (Happy Valley, OR) registered two shots and Lucas Muller (Senior/Independence, OR) tallied one.
