Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ortiz Nets Game-Winning Goal to Knock Off Willamette in Extra Time

SALEM, Ore.- Nadya Ortiz (Senior/Waimanalo, HI) netted the game-winning goal in the dying minutes of extra time to lift the Pacific University women's soccer team over Willamette and earn all three points.

It was a very cagey contest on Sunday afternoon with what appeared to be some very tired legs on the pitch, as both teams were playing their second game in as many days. The Bearcats (2-4-1, 1-1-0 NWC) narrowly held the advantage in shots with 13, but the Boxers (3-2-0, 1-1-0 NWC) were more clinical with their chances, tallying 10 shots with four on target.

The center back pairing of Julianna Ventura (Junior/Pasco, WA) and Peyton Seals (Junior/Longview, WA) held strong for 107 minutes, anchoring a backline that kept a clean sheet for the second time this season.

Mikayla Farrow (Sophomore/Sparks, NV) proved to be quite dangerous on the wing, firing three shots with two on frame. The sophomore used her pace to create space in wide areas and became a threat to score on the counter.

Tessa Bretschieder (Freshman/Eugene, OR) showed her class as well, notching two shots in her 86 minutes on the pitch while Ivette Garcia-Gomez (Sophomore/Hillsboro, OR) also got forward from her midfield position, registering two shots with one on target.

Neither team seemed to gain advantage in the 90 minutes of regulation. The first 10 minutes of extra time were also quite uneventful.

This set up for a very exciting final period, as the Boxers pushed hard for the winner. Catalina Alvarado (Junior/Tucson, AZ) raced down the right wing in the 108th minute and whipped in a wonderful cross to Ortiz who was left free in the center of the penalty area. The senior took her chance brilliantly and headed it home to give her team the victory and all three points.

By The Numbers
  • Catherine Corlett (Sophomore/Gilbert, AZ) made a season-high eight saves in goal.
  • Alvarado earned her first assist of the season.
  • Pacific has won two of their last three matches against Willamette.
