Boxers Score Twice in Second Half to Down Geoducks

TUMWATER, Wash.- The Pacific University men's soccer team showed some excellent resilience in their 3-2 victory over The Evergreen State College. The Boxers fell behind on two separate occasions but used two second-half goals from Cade Taniguchi (Senior/Kula, HI) and Bryce Brown (Freshman/West Linn, OR) to earn the come-from-behind win.

The contest would take place at Black Hills High School and the Geoducks (0-2) proved to be quite comfortable in their home state, as they opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest. The Boxers (2-1) managed to find an equalizer less than 10 minutes later, but the hosts fired themselves back into the lead before halftime. It was all Pacific in the second half as two goals and some brilliant defending would get the visitors over the line

Recording 18 total shots with 10 on target, the Boxers proved to be the dominant team. Evergreen State were quite dangerous as well, registering 12 shots with eight on frame.

In the 6th minute, Matthew Jordan put the hosts on the board as he put a rebounded shot into the back of the net to give his team the lead in the early minutes.

Pacific quickly replied in the 13th minute when Cooper Sheakley (Freshman/Happy Valley, OR) netted the equalizer after Noah Edwards (Freshman/Honolulu, HI) picked him out with the pass.

The Geoducks earned themselves a halftime advantage when Andreas Malunat bagged a goal of his own to make it 2-1.

The Boxers showed their class in the second half and elevated their pace of play, tallying eight shots while Evergreen State would manage just four. Pacific also won five corners in the final 45 minutes, creating a multitude of scoring chances.

Taniguchi scored following a deflection just after the second half kickoff to bring the teams level at 2-2.

In the 64th minute, Joey Musto (Junior/Makawao, HI) did extremely well to find Brown in some space to tap into an open net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Some fantastic defending from the Boxers' backline would lead the team to a 3-2 victory to close out their trip to Washington.

By The Numbers

  • Edwards and Musto each earned their first assist of the season.
  • Luis Rojas-Celis (Freshman/Redwood City, CA) made three saves between the posts and did not allow a goal after stepping in to play the second half.
  • This was the first and only recorded game between the two schools.
