FOREST GROVE, Ore.- After back-to-back wins the Pacific Boxers dropped a tough contest to No. 14 Whitworth.
After a tough first half of shooting, the Boxers (8-13, 4-8 NWC) were able to finish with a decent night, going 37% (22-59) from the field. The Boxers' defense made their presence known, getting 13 steals on the night.
Whitworth (18-3, 10-2 NWC) had a tough time tonight with the boxer defense tonight when the Pirates ended the game having committed 17 total turnovers. But their shooting is what helped them win the game going 47% (27-58) from the field.
Jacob Bolger (Junior/Portland, OR) had himself another terrific game by having a team-high of 20 points in tonight's contest. He also tied with
Trevon Ridley (Freshman/Murrieta, CA) with a total of six rebounds tonight.
Jared Cattell (Senior/Bremerton, WA) and
Antoine Stitt (Senior/San Leandro, CA) would each have a pair of threes in tonight's game.
How It Happened
The Boxers started off fast with two quick buckets by a Bolger dunk and a jumper by
Ethan Chung (Junior/San Ramon, CA). But the Boxers struggled to make anything after that, going on a scoring drought for over two minutes. It was eventually when Ridley stole the ball from the Pirates and proceeded to make a layup. The Pirates responded with a quick three, but
Lucas Winkler (Freshman/Portland, OR) answered with his own steal and layup for the Boxers.
The Pirates would then go on a 7-0 run with six minutes left to play in the first half. The run was put to a stop by a Bolger layup making the score 26-16 with the Pirates out in front. With 2:10 left to go in the first half, Cattell was able to bury the Boxers first three-pointer of the game. The Pirates would then put together another 7-0 run to extend their lead. Cattell would end the half with a corner three at the buzzer making the score 38-23 with the Pirates still in control.
The Boxers struggled in the first half to make anything go down beyond the arc, going 2-12 with Cattell making the only pair of threes.
The Boxer defense turned up the heat on defense to start the second half causing six turnovers in seven minutes. Bolger then started to find a rhythm scoring seven of the nine points for the Boxers eight minutes into the second half. Stitt would then start to catch some fire at the three-point line making two three-pointers in a row.
But the Pirates kept pouring it on the Boxers continuing to out rebound and outscore the Boxers. Winkler would find his first three of the game with seven minutes left to cut the deficit to 15 points. But the Boxers couldn't build anything off of that. The Boxers would end the game making 5 of their last 7 field goals.
