TACOMA, Wash.- Pacific University softball snapped a six-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader at Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon. Highlighted by a total of 18 hits and 14 runs, the formidable Boxer offense showed their strength at the plate.
Â
In the first game,
Sydney Rusin (Junior/Portland, OR) dominated on both sides of the ball, tossing a complete game and while going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI at the plate.
Â
The Boxers would rack up seven runs on seven hits, while only giving up one run and four hits to the Loggers.Â
Â
Game two was a pitcher's duel, with the Boxers only scoring two runs until the seventh inning, where they would give themselves a 7-1 lead.
Â
With Rusin pitching a complete game in game one,
Lindsey Greenfield (Sophomore/Mukilteo,WA) would toe the rubber game two, where she would do the same. Today's wins were both credited to these pitchers as they both went the distance. They held the Loggers to a total of three runs for both games combined.Â
Â
Game 1
Â
The first game of the day started off with a
Rylee Patton (Senior/Eastvale, CA) single, followed by a base hit from Rusin to score the Pacific shortstop. Scoring in the top of the first would prove to give Pacific some early life.
Â
With Rusin in the circle, she set the tone of the game, allowing no runners on in the bottom of the first.
Â
A single and sacrifice fly in the second would double the Boxers' lead.
Â
The top of the third is where the Boxers showed off their bats, starting it off with a walk, and then back-to-back doubles by
Elizabeth Young (Senior/Port Orchard, WA) and Rusin brought in a couple runs. Two more runs would come across in the inning, both due to defensive mishaps by the Loggers. This strong inning put Pacific up 6-1.Â
Â
The Boxers would score once more in the top of the fourth due to a sac-fly, which gave them a comfortable 7-1 lead.Â
Â
Rusin would pitch a complete game, and did not allow a run until the bottom of the sixth inning. Rusin surrendered just four hits and one run, while getting two strikeouts. Her performance in the circle was nothing short of brilliant.Â
Â
Â
Â
Game 2
Â
The momentum from game one would stay with the Boxers as they went into the top of the first in game two. With two outs, Patton would hit a double, and then would be brought in by a Loggers error to put Pacific on the board.Â
Â
With Greenfield in the circle, the bottom of the second would start off with a single, followed by a couple of stolen bases and another hit, but Greenfield would settle in and keep the damage to a minimum by only allowing one run and leaving the bases loaded.Â
Â
Pacific did not stay in a lull for long as the third inning was highlighted by a
Samantha Petitt (Junior/Tigard, OR) single, where she would advance to second on an error by Puget Sound. Still, the Boxers were not able to capitalize on the runner in scoring position, and the score remained tied 1-1.Â
Â
With another hit in the fourth, the Boxers were still not able to gain a lead on the Loggers, leaving two on base.
Â
Finally in the fifth, Pacific was able to break the tie, starting off with a single by
Haylie Uetake (Senior/Ewa Beach, HI), where she would advance on a wild pitch, and come around to score on Patton's third hit of the day. With a 2-1 lead headed into the bottom of the fifth, the momentum shifted to the Boxer dugout.
Â
Greenfield was able to hold Puget Sound hitless for three straight innings, and would only allow a single in the fifth, but once again got out of the inning unharmed.Â
Â
The Boxers were not comfortable going into the bottom of the seventh with only a one run lead, but would add some insurance in the final frame. With four singles and a double to change the pace of the game, Pacific was able to plate five runs to give themselves a 7-1 lead.Â
Â
Greenfield would close out the game, allowing one run in the seventh. She would earn the win while only allowing two runs, and five hits in the game, while also getting five strikeouts.Â
