PORTLAND, Ore. – Pacific Women's Soccer made it two wins in two games to start the 2022 season with its 3-1 victory over hosts Warner Pacific on Tuesday night.
The Boxers were very bright in attack, led by
Ivette Garcia-Gomez's excellent attacking display. Warner Pacific nearly found an equalizer in the dying minutes, but a timely Pacific counter attack secured the road the win.
Top Performers
- Ivette Garcia-Gomez found the back of the net twice on Tuesday night, scoring once from the penalty spot and doubling her luck from just outside the box shortly after halftime.
- Mirella Garcia scored for the second straight contest, netting her second goal of the season.
- Chanyn Santos was lively on the left wing, drawing a foul in the box to earn Pacific a penalty kick before delivering an assist for the team's second goal.
- Kylie Pascual made eight saves between the posts.
How It Happened
The Boxers struck first after they were awarded a penalty in the 8
th minute following a brilliant attacking move. A switching ball found Santos streaking in behind the Warner Pacific defense, and the freshman did well to beat the goalkeeper and draw the foul in the box. Garcia-Gomez kept her composure and slotted her spot kick into the back of the net to give her team the early 1-0 lead.
Pacific doubled its advantage just after the second half kickoff when Santos made another driving run down the left flank before picking out Garcia-Gomez at the top of the box. The junior shifted the ball onto her right foot and snuck her shot just inside the inside of the post to double the Boxers' lead and bag her second goal of the night.
The hosts finally found a foothold in the game when they nicked a goal through xx just x minutes later, making it a one-goal game in the 51
st minute.
Forest Grove's team had a difficult period to endure in the final 10 minutes when the Knights applied a great deal of pressure. The defensive backline held strong and Pascual came through with an important stop in a 1-on-1 opportunity. Pacific held on just long enough to spark a dangerous counter attack that was expertly finished off by Garcia, sealing the 3-1 victory on the road.
What It Means
The Boxers have defeated Warner Pacific by the 3-1 score line in back-to-back seasons. This is the second straight season Pacific has started the season with two straight wins.
