EUGENE, Ore. – Pacific Women's Soccer trailed on two separate occasions on Sunday afternoon, but the Boxers showed great resilience as they scored two goals in each half to come away with the 4-2 win at Bushnell.
Pacific conceded just three minutes into the contest and eventually found themselves 2-1 down after 25 minutes played. The Boxers nicked an equalizer just before the halftime whistle and netted twice in the second half to improve to 3-0 on the year. Forest Grove's team has scored 11 goals in its three matches to begin the season, which is as many as they scored in all of 2021.
Top Performers
- Mirella Garcia found the back of the net twice, making it four goals in three games for the freshman. She has scored in all three games as the forward continues to impress in her first year wearing the Red and Black.
- Brooklyn Yano bagged her first goal of the season, capitalizing on her only shot in the contest. The junior was also one of four Boxers to play all 90 minutes.
- Julianna Ventura got forward from her center back position to score the first goal of her Pacific career.
- Peyton Seals was bright in midfield and delivered two assists on the day.
How It Happened
Bushnell struck early with a goal in the fourth minute through Dejah Wallot. Pacific would respond well, however, when
Sydney Burrington's shot deflected into the path of Yano, who tucked her shot into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.
The Beacons restored their advantage just over a minute later when Brooke Molina scored via a deflection. Despite the early adversity, the Boxers grew into the game and Garcia showed her class by scoring just before the break.
Peyton Seals held the ball at the top of the box before flicking it to Garcia, who hit her shot on the bottom of the crossbar and watched it ricochet into the net to make it 2-2.
Pacific started to show their dominance in the second half, creating more chances and holding majority of the possession. In the 52
nd minute, the Boxers sprung a quick counter attack and drew a foul in the box to send Garcia to the penalty spot. She gave Pacific their first lead of the game by slotting her penalty home.
The Boxers continued to apply pressure and won three consecutive corner kicks in the 78
th minute. The third corner prove to be the lucky one, as Ventura turned in the cross to seal the 4-2 victory on the road.
What It Means
The win gives Pacific their best start since 2013. The Boxers will head into Northwest Conference action with a 3-0 overall record.
