Boxers Split Season Opening Double Header

SEGUIN, Tex. – The Pacific University Baseball team traveled to Texas to play their season-opening series against Texas Lutheran. The Boxers dropped the series opener 10-7 before picking up the 4-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
  
Top Performers
  • Isaac Lovings collected four hits including a homerun in the Boxer's first game of the season.
  • Tyler Quinn recorded four hits while Ty Yukumoto recorded three hits on the day.
  • Robert Drayer homered in the top of third to break the game open for the Boxers in the second contest.
  • Tyler Agnew had a stellar performance on the mound throwing two complete innings only surrendering two hits in the eight batters he faced.
  • Ayden Ruminski had an electric start to his Pacific career throwing one and two-thirds innings in relief while also earning the win with his appearance.
 
Game 1

Kahi Bisho made his twenty-sixth career start for the Boxers, he pitched three strong innings allowing only three base runners. Bisho's appearance was 60 pitches total in the three and two-thirds he worked.
 
After a scoreless first frame, Isaac Lovings blasted his first homer of the year with a solo shot in the second inning of game one to get things started.
 
After three scoreless innings for the TLU offense, they opened up the scoring with 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 4-1 lead. 
 
After a single by Tyler Quinn and walk for Ty Yukumoto, Lovings would give the Boxers some more energy in the sixth inning when he singled to left field bringing in Quinn to cut the lead in half. Drew Thomas) would continue the rally with a single to left field, advancing Patrick Muskat to second and plating Lovings and Yukumoto to tie up the game 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
 
A double from Yukumoto and single from Lovings would bring two runs home for the Boxers in the seventh inning.
 
The Bulldogs replied by scoring by pushing across five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-9 in favor of the hosts. TLU then scored one insurance run in the eighth.
 
Yukumoto's second knock of the day would bring in Quinn but it would prove to be too little, too late for the Boxers, as Texas Lutheran took the series opener 10-7.
 
Game 2
 
TLU's Tyler Post drove in the first two runs of the ball game in the bottom of the first with a solid single through the right side. 
 
Freshman Jackson Price got his first collegiate start as a Boxer, throwing 2 innings. The Boxers reached into the bullpen early as Cayden Okada (Sophomore, Waipahu, HI) entered in the third inning, striking out 2 batters and allowing only one hit in his 2.1 innings pitched.
 
Robert Drayer smacked his first homer of the season in the third inning to get the Boxers on the board.
 
Following a walk by Thomas, Matt Gibbs would single through the right side to find his first hit of the day. With two outs and the bases loaded the Boxers tied up the game 2-2 in the fourth inning following back-to-back walks from Tokishi and Quinn.
 
Ayden Ruminski would take over in the bottom of the fifth after Okada's solid outing, allowing only two hits in his 1.2 innings and earning the win for the game.
 
In the top half of the sixth, Dawson Tokishi stepped to the plate and lined into left center for an RBI single, plating Gibbs to take the 3-2 lead.
 
Following walks three consecutive walks, Drayer found the fourth walk in a row of the seventh inning, bringing in Lovings for a much-needed insurance run.
 
Aidan Kearns would be the next hurler to toe the rubber, taking over in the bottom of the seventh inning for his first time in over a year. Davis Koester would then find his way back onto the mound to close out the seventh inning as the Bulldogs left two on base.
 
Head coach Brian Billings would then hand the ball to Joey Harmon to close out the final two frames to shut down an eighth inning rally from the Bulldogs, striking out three batters and continuing on to earn the save.
 
The Boxers earned the 4-2 victory to split the season opening doubleheader.
