Boxers Win Game One in Series Against Whitworth

FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University softball team dropped two of three games on Sunday and Monday to Whitworth. Game four was haulted in the top of the fifth due to weather and will be resumed at a later date.

Top Performers
  • Mia Barrozo pitched a complete game in the first game of the series picking up the win. In the game she only allowed five hits in the 29 batters she faced.
  • In game three of the series, Samantha Petit went 2-2 with a walk as well as scoring the Boxers only two runs.
  • Rylie Kihara played an impressive right field in the three games making numerous max effort plays to help her pitchers out.
How It Happened

Game 1
The first three innings were a pitchers' duel as the Boxers left two runners stranded on the base paths while the Pirates left four runners on base. The Boxers were able to finally to get to the Pirates pitcher in the Bottom of the Third when Alexus Carter was able to produce an RBI single that scored Petit from second base.

Pacific would tack on two more runs to their lead in the Bottom of the Fifth when Chole Knepp came to the plate a drove home two runners on another RBI single.

Whitworth responded with a two run homerun in the Top of the Sixth but those would be the last runs scored for either side as the Boxers took game one, 3-2.

Game 2
The Pirates were the first ones on the board in the second game of the series in the Top of the Third when they were able to produce an RBI double. The Boxers however would respond in the bottom half of the inning when Nicole Leadley singled driving in Knepp from third base.

The Bottom of the Fourth would produce another run for the Boxers as Rylee Patton doubled to center field and drove in Carter who led off the inning with a triple.

Pacific would hold the 2-1 lead until the Top of the Seventh when the Pirates scored three runs on double as well as a fielding error by the Boxers. Whitworth would even the series at one apiece as they took game two 4-2.

Game 3
Wanting to take a two to one series lead, the Boxers were able to strike first in the Bottom of the First when Petit led off the game with a triple and then was driven home following Carter reaching first base on an error by the Pirate right fielder.

The Pirates were able to knock Barrozo out of the game in the Top of the Third as they produced four runs all on doubles that found the outfield gaps.

The visitors from there would put nine unanswered runs on the board and take the 13-1 lead. The Boxers manufactured a second run in the Bottom of the Fifth but it would not be enough as the Pirates would earn the 13-2 win in game three.
