Boxer Cross Country Competes in Mike Johnson Classic

Monmouth, Ore. - Pacific's cross country teams competed in the Mike Johnson Classic cross country meet, hosted by Western Oregon, on Friday, September 22nd. The meet was held on the Ash Creek Preserve cross country course.  The women raced 6,000m and the men raced 8,000m. The women took 4th place with 102 points, and the men finished in 7th with 151 points. 

Dina Altuhovs and Reese Yamamoto led their teams in the 6k and 8k races, respectively. Altuhovs placed 12th in 22:49.8, a PR for her, and Yamamoto placed 34th in 27:32.2, close to a PR for him. It was a competitive meet, with Western Oregon University winning both team races. 

"Today was a good opportunity to embrace a tough course and compete against some really good teams," said head cross country coach Bailee Krings. "Both teams had some really positive things happen in their races, and both teams have more to give going forward."
 

Top Five Performers 

MEN

  1. Reese Yamamoto took 34th place in 27:32.2.

  2. Jagjot Singh took 36th place in 27:38.0.

  3. Carlos Masuko took 41st place in 27:43.8.

  4. Dylan Todd took 48th place in 28:19.9.

  5. Aaron Brewer took 51st place in 28:34.7.

WOMEN

  1. Dina Altuhovs took 12th place in 22:49.8.

  2. Cris Brethower took 22nd place in 23:27.4.

  3. Alena Krull took 24th place in 23:30.1

  4. Natalie Taylor took 25th place in 23:35.0.

  5. Maddy Hubbs took 31st place in 24:00.1. 

 

How It Happened 

Reese Yamamoto ran as front-runner for the men's team, with Jagjot Singh, Carlos Masuko, Dylan Todd, and Aaron Brewer chasing behind to round out the top five. There was a 62-second spread between Pacific's #1 and #5 runners. Kadyn Eves and Preston Graham rounded out the Boxers top 7 with their 52nd and 55th place finishes, respectively. The men got out much more conservatively than last race, and several Boxers moved up throughout the race. 

Dina Altuhovs ran as front-runner for the Boxers and was followed by Cris Brethower, Alena Krull, Natalie Taylor and Maddy Hubbs to make up Pacific's top five. There was a 71-second spread between Pacific's #1-#5. Payton Betz and Morgan Boddy rounded out the Boxer's top seven with their 34th and 42nd place finishes, respectively. The women also moved up throughout the race. 

 

Up Next 

The Boxers will compete in the Willamette Invitational on Saturday, September 30th at the Willamette University Cross Country course in Salem, Oregon.
