COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Pacific took the No. 11 ranked team in the d3hoops.com preseason poll to overtime and led until the final seconds. But Trinity (Texas) drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to avoid the upset and edge the Boxers 82-21 Saturday afternoon at Colorado College.
Lucas Winkler, who made two free throws with 27 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, again went to the charity stripe with 15 seconds left in overtime.
After making the first free throw to extend Pacific's lead to 81-79, Winkler missed the second, giving Trinity a shot at the game-winning buzzer-beater.
Winkler, who went 10-for-13 from the free throw line, finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals in 42 minutes.
Jake Blazona also filled up the state sheet, recording 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Drew Gumin added 14 points and three rebounds.
Pacific and Trinity battled through 16 ties and 20 lead changes.
The Boxers matched their largest lead, seven points, 68-61, with 4:39 remaining in the second half. Trinity answered with an 8-0 run to take a 74-72 lead with 38 seconds to go before Winkler's two free throws sent the game into overtime.
