Pacific falls to Whitman in Northwest Conference semifinals

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Pacific's best men's basketball season in more than 20 years came to an end Friday night with a 78-52 loss to Whitman in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference tournament.

Playing in the postseason for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, the Boxers jumped out to a 9-2 lead before Whitman battled back to tie the game at 11-11.The Blues then took a 13-11 lead on two free throws and never trailed again.

Whitman, which led 41-30 at halftime, extended its advantage to 15 points, 50-35, with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. The Blues outscored Pacific 37-22 in the second half.

Devin Fortune finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead the Boxers. Zachary Bates added eight points off the bench. Lucas Winkler had six points and six rebounds before fouling out with 4:35 remaining in the game.

Pacific shot 36.4 percent from the field in the loss, including 23.8 percent from behind the 3-point arc (5-21). Whitman shot 51 percent overall and 43.8 percent from 3.

The Boxers finished the 2023-24 season with a 15-11 record.
