Murphy records 1,000th career kill at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Pacific could not extend its winning streak, falling 3-0 Friday night at Northwest Conference preseason favorite Whitworth.

But the Boxers did have an individual accomplishment to celebrate as senior Mara Murphy recorded her 1,000th career kill.

The first set saw four lead changes with the Pirates taking the lead for good at 10-9. Leading 20-17, Whitworth closed the set on a 5-0 run to finish off the Boxers 25-17.

After falling behind 4-0 in the second set, Pacific battled back to an 11-11 tie on back-to-back aces from Kayla Craft. Tied 18-18, Whitworth won 7 of the final 9 points to take the set 25-20.

Pacific, who entered the match on a three-game winning streak, never led in the third set as the Pirates raced out to an 11-3 advantage. Trailing 22-13, the Boxers answered with a 4-0 run before falling 25-18.

Murphy finished with 10 kills to lead Pacific. Danica Nelson had 18 digs. Rorie Frias recorded 14 assists and six digs.
