Boxers win third straight NWC series

The Pacific baseball team recorded a season-high 17 hits to roll past Whitworth 14-7 Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Benjamin Lewis was 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs in the series clinching victory. 

Trailing 6-5, Lewis scored the tying run on a Trevor Kazahaya single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vincent Lagatta then scored the go-ahead run on a Colby Podratz single to left field.

The Boxers scored seven runs in the fifth to take a 12-6 lead. Matt Gibbs delivered the biggest blow. With two outs and the bases loaded, the senior tripled to center field to knock in three runs.

After allowing four runs in the first two innings, freshman pitcher Nicholas Saelens settled in to give Pacific seven innings and improve to 3-3 on the season.

Sunday

GAME 1

Pacific evened the series with a 6-2 victory Sunday morning. 

Chance Wallace had a career-high 12 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win. Junior allowed six hits and two runs. 

The Boxers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Gibbs was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. 

Saturday

Pacific opened the three-game series with a a 13-2 loss Saturday night.

The Pirates scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the game.

Freshmen Hunter Nishina and Nathaniel Chapman both had two hits in the loss.

With the two wins, the Boxers improved to 7-5 in the Northwest Conference and 7-11 overall. 

Pacific has won 7 of its last 9 games after starting the season 0-9.

Next: The Boxers travel to Whitman for a three-game series on April 5-6.
