TACOMA, Wash. – Nicholas Saelens gave Pacific's bullpen a much-needed rest.
The sophomore recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in a complete game, holding Puget Sound to four hits and two runs to lead the Boxers to a 9-2 win Saturday afternoon.
The Northwest Conference victory came after Pacific dropped the opener of the three-game series, 14-2.
Game 1: Puget Sound 14, Pacific 2
Trevor Kazahaya singled up the middle to score Benjamin Lewis and tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. However, Puget Sound answered with 12 runs in the bottom of the seventh to run away with the victory.
Pacific senior Governor Aufranc allowed just two runs through six innings before hitting the first two Puget Sound batters in the bottom of the seventh, then surrendering three straight RBI singles.
The Loggers went on to hit three home runs in the seventh inning.
Game 2: Pacific 9, Puget Sound 2
Saelens tossed his second complete game of the season and the third of his young collegiate career to lead the Boxers to the Game 2 win.
After Kazahaya and Lewis hit game-tying home runs in the second and fourth innings, respectively, Hunter Nishina put Pacific ahead 3-2 with an RBI single in the fifth.
The Boxers added one run in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more in the ninth.
Miles Bergman went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Gannon McGeen added an RBI double in the victory.
Next:Â Pacific concludes the three-game series at Puget Sound on Sunday at noon.
