TACOMA, Wash. – Benjamin Lewis hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Pacific baseball team to a 9-8 win at Puget Sound in Sunday's rubber match.
The game went back and forth. After the Boxers scored two runs in the top of the first, Puget Sound answered with four in the bottom of the inning.
Pacific tied the game at 4-4 in the third when Lewis and Hunter Nishina scored on a single to right field by Miles Bergman. Max Finkelstein then drove in Bergman with a base hit to center field to put the Boxers on top, 5-4.
After the Loggers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, Jake Gallagher hit a three-run homer in the fourth to give Pacific an 8-6 advantage.
Puget Sound responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 8-8.
Pacific freshman Aiden Carpenter earned his first career win, shutting out the Loggers over the final two innings. Carpenter allowed just one hit and recorded four strikeouts.
Lewis finished 3-for-4 with a walk, a home run, a stolen base, and four runs scored.
With the win, the Boxers improved to 8-10 in the Northwest Conference and 11-20 overall.
