Martinez one win away from All-American honors

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Senior Bailey Martinez lost her first match but then battled back through the consolation bracket to stay in the hunt for All-American honors on day one at the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association national championships, hosted by Oklahoma City University.

Bailey needs one win on Saturday to guarantee a finish no worse than eighth, which would give her WCWA All-American status. Three victories would get her a bronze medal and third place bragging rights.

Martinez, the No. 10 seed at 143 pounds, dropped her opening match to Campbellville's Hannah Gladden, 7-2. That sent her to the consolation bracket, where she responded with a first round win over Adrena Ng of Jamestown, 10-0.

She followed that with a narrow 3-2 victory over Kaliegh Jennings of The University of the Cumberlands. In that match, Martinez trailed 2-0 in the first round after a Jennings take down put her on the board first. But she picked up a push out point and then a take down to secure the match and keep her season alive.

In her third match in the consolation bracket, she won by fall over Courtney Gray of Campbellsville in 1:02, moving into Saturday's action.

Her first match on Saturday pits her against Olivia Seppinni of McKendree, who won two winners bracket matches before losing and dropping into the consolation bracket.

Pacific's CarrieAnn Randolph, also wrestling at 143 pounds, lost to Seppinni by technical fall (12-2) to open her tournament, but bounced back with a victory in the first round of the consolation bracket. There she topped Pamela Fair of Jamestown, pinning her in 2:01, but was then pinned in the second round of consolation by Berenice Blanco of Missiouri Baptist (2:02).

Wyatt Saling dropped her two matches at 136 pounds, ending her season. She lost to Diana Nevarez of McKendree by Fall (1:42) and then lost in the consolation bracket to Kasey Kruczek of Campbellsville KY by fall in 44 seconds.

Action continues on Saturday morning, beginning at 11 a.m. Central time.
