Boxers and Linfield Play to 1-1 Tie

A short-handed goal in the 88th minute by Robert Nurmi led to a 1-1 tie for the Pacific men's soccer team with host Linfield on Saturday in McMinnville.

After a red card was called on the Boxers in the 87th minute, who are 1-4-2 and 0-2-1 in the Northwest Conference), the Pacific offense quickly regrouped a man down and got the equalizer from Nurmi.

The Wildcats (2-4-1, 0-2-1 NWC) got on the board in the 10th minute on a goal by Luke Marks, who headed in a throw-in for the early lead.

"We played really well today," said Pacific head coach Eric Mild. "We responded after conceding a soft goal. The red card was harsh but the guys were determined to fight to the very end."

In the contest, the Boxers had a 16-10 advantage on shots including a decisive 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The aggressive Pacific attack forced Linfield goalkeeper Cameron Perron to make 10 saves in the 110-minute match. Nurmi led the Pacific offense with four shots including his equalizer.

Boxer goalkeeper Brock Jones (pictured) and his defense blocked a shot in the 102nd minute en route to the tie. Jones had three saves for Pacific in his 110 minutes of action.

Next, Pacific will host Willamette on Sunday at noon on Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium. The Bearcats come into Forest Grove on a four-match winning streak, having won 2-1 on Saturday over George Fox.
