FOREST GROVE, Ore.- Pacific opened its season with a strong showing against Portland Bible College, dominating from start-to-finish in an 123-59 win on Tuesday night inside the Stoller Center.
The Boxers showed some tenacious defense, forcing 45 turnovers to create 57 points in transition. Pacific showed its strength in numbers with a massive 71 points from the bench.
Truman Young was the leader of that second unit with a breakout performance on his debut, putting up 22 points and six three-pointers.
Pacific broke the program record for assists in a game with 33 on the night. The previous record was set in 2009 when the Boxers recorded 32 assists against Multnomah.
The Red and Black saw 11 Boxers make their debuts, contributing heavily to the impressive win.
Top Performers
- Truman Young led the way with 22 points on 7-of-14 (6-11 3FG) shooting in just 12 minutes.
- Ethan Moss was excellent in his return from injury, tallying 15 points while going 6-of-10 from the floor.
- Lucas Winkler proved to be the facilitator with a game-high 11 assists. The point guard also chipped in with seven points, five steals, and six rebounds.
- Jared Cattell and Ethan Chung dropped 12 points each to kick off their senior seasons.
How It Happened
Portland Bible shocked the Boxers in the early minutes with its 5-0 run to start the contest. Pacific started the game 0-of-6 from the field until Cattell finally ended the drought with a steal and score, sparking a quick 8-0 run to give the hosts their first lead.
Truman Young started to catch fire by hitting back-to-back three pointers and the Boxers' defense started to apply some heavy pressure, forcing eight turnovers in less than four minutes. This allowed Forest Grove's team to put together an 20-1 run to take full control of the game.
Young continued his hot shooting when he nailed three more triples to give himself 19 points at the break and Moss got in on the action by knocking down a couple threes of his own to reach double figures. The Boxers built quite the advantage after another 12-1 scoring run and took an 66-27 lead into the locker room.
The rout continued in the second half when Young made his sixth and seventh three-balls of the night. Cattell started to find the hot hand with back-to-back baskets at the 10-minute mark to get himself in double-digits on the night.
Pacific poured it on in the final minutes and eventually cruised to the 123-59 win to start the 2022-23 campaign.
