CLAREMONT, Calif.- Pacific men's basketball suffered its first defeat in nearly a month when nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps handed the Boxers an 83-60 loss inside Roberts Pavilion.
Pacific never found the shooting stroke and went just 5-for-21 from three-point range and were held under 40% shooting. The Stags were dominant on the glass as they out-rebounded Pacific 42-23.
Top Performers
- Truman Young was the lone Boxer in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a pair of three-pointers.
- Jacob Bolger tallied nine points and three rebounds in his first start of the season.
- Lucas Winkler enjoyed a solid performance with six points on 3-of-4 shooting to go along with his five assists.
How It Happened
Pacific started off the contest 0-for-7 from the field until
Isaiah Africano crashed the offensive glass and tipped in from close range to get his team on the board. The hosts capitalized on the Boxers' shooting woes in the early minutes and managed to open up an 11-2 lead. Young connected from long range to net Pacific's first three-pointer of the night but the Stags replied with two triples of their own to extend the advantage to 15 points.
The Red and Black managed to stay within striking distance as
Lucas Winkler and
Jared Cattell poured in a pair of buckets to bring Pacific within 12. The Boxers were just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half and saw themselves facing a 41-30 deficit going into the break.
Africano quickly cut the lead to single digits by hitting a layup to start the second half, but the Boxers would follow with four straight missed field goal attempts as they couldn't seem to find a rhythm offensively. Winkler provided a spark with four consecutive points to force a CMS timeout at the 11:44 mark, but the Stags would use that timeout well and snatched the momentum to propel themselves to the victory.
They would quickly jump out to a 23-point lead and cruise the rest of the way, earning the 83-60 win on their home court.
