Boxer Softball Drops Two Games to Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pacific University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday to Pomona-Pitzer. The first game ended 3-1 in favor of the Sagehens who also took game two by a score of 12-4 both being played at Pomona-Pitzer Softball Stadium.
 
Carly Bursch (Senior/Santee, CA) got the nod as the starting pitcher for game one for the second consecutive day. In today's out Bursch threw 4.1 innings with three strikeouts while giving up one earned run.
 
Game one was highlighted by Samantha Petitt (Junior/Tigard, OR) who went 2-4 with a run scored.
 
Sydney Rusin (Junior/Portland, OR) had a successful day at the plate in game two going 3-3 from the plate with a run scored and a run batted in.
 
Game 1
 
The Boxers opened the scoring in game one when Carli Zanassi (Freshman/Bothell, WA) singled to the shortstop scoring Petitt from third base. Petitt was able to move around the diamond successfully after she stole a base and advanced to third on a Rylee Patton (Senior/Eastvale, CA) ground out.
 
The Sagehens leveled the game in the bottom of the first at one. Patton would come up in the third inning again and double to left field with one out. The Boxers however, would not capitalize with the runner in scoring position.
 
The visitors from Forest Grove would look to take the lead in the top of the fifth following a Petitt single however she would be thrown out trying to steal for the final out of the top half of the inning.
 
The Sagehens would score two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a homerun which would prove to be the game deciding runs.
 
The Boxers would make one final push in the top of the seventh when MiKaila Neilson (Junior/Frenchtown, MT) hit a one out double to right field. The late push would come up short in game one however resulting in a 3-1 loss.
 
Game 2
 
The Boxer would open up game two on the day looking for their first win on the season. It was a fast start for the Boxers in game two putting up two runs when Rusin would score two runs with one swing of the bat. Petitt would score following a bunt base hit and then advancing to second on a Patton single. Jordan Okumura (Freshman/Mililani, HI) would score on the play following reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing second.
 
The Sagehens would get one back in the bottom of the inning on a homerun but the Boxers would remain on top 2-1. Both teams would go scoreless in the second inning before the Sagehens would have a four-run inning to take a 5-2 lead.
 
The hosts would stretch the lead to 8-2 before Neilson would come to the plate in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on a double shrinking the deficit to 8-4 and giving the Boxers some life.
 
Pomona-Pitzer would have a four-run bottom of the sixth inning putting the game away for good on the way to a 12-4 victory.

The Boxers will look to pick up their first win of the season on Sunday with double header against Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. The scheduled first pitch is 11 A.M.
