FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific was unable to slow down the mighty Pacific Lutheran lineup on Saturday afternoon and the Lutes managed to take both games of the doubleheader to start the series.
The Boxers were shutout in game one and mustered just one hit against PLU's Cassidy Conrad. In game two, Pacific kept it close for four innings, but a late surge from the visitors allowed them to cruise to their second win of the day.
Samantha Petitt (Junior/Tigard, OR) notched a two-hit day scoring one run and driving in
another.
Rylee Patton (Senior/Eastvale, CA) kept her hitting streak alive, sneaking out the lone hit in game one while going 2-for-5 on the afternoon. Patton's hit streak extends 11 games as she currently leads the team with a batting average of .437 in her excellent senior campaign.
How It Happened
Sydney Rusin (Junior/Portland, OR) started game one in the circle and surrendered five earned runs in her three innings of work. She would hand the ball over to
Carly Bursch (Senior/Santee, CA) who made her first appearance since Feb. 12. The senior enjoyed a solid outing in her return from injury, striking out two batters in her two innings.
A four-run first inning gave Pacific Lutheran a comfortable lead early in the contest. Two homers in the fourth frame made it an eight-run advantage for the visitors and they would hold on to end the contest after five innings.
In game two, Patton's RBI single scored Pettit from second base to cancel out the Lutes' run in the top of the first.
PLU replied with two runs in the second, but Pacific got one back in the third when Petitt smacked her second double of the day to score
Annika McNeel (Senior/Beaverton, OR).
Despite the Boxers' best efforts, the formidable Pacific Lutheran lineup exploded for six runs over the next two frames. The Red and Black scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but it would be too little, too late and the Lutes would come away with the 9-4 win.
