SPOKANE, Wash. -- Pacific erased a 21-point second-half deficit to tie Whitworth with 2 minutes remaining, but a game-winning layup by the Pirates with 1 second remaining ended the Boxers hope of completing the comeback.
Pacific fell 67-65 Saturday night at Whitworth to drop to 0-2 in the Northwest Conference.
Tied 19-19 with 5:58 remaining in the first half, the Pirates went on a 7-0 run. Whitworth then closed the half on another 7-0 run to take a 41-27 lead into halftime.
After the Pirates extended their lead to 21 points with 14:25 remaining in the game, Pacific answered with a 13-0 run to get back within single digits, 53-45, with 10:10 left to play.
A layup by
Devin Fortune got the Boxers within three points with 2:43 to go. A
Jake Blazona 3-pointer then tied the game at 65-65 with 2:01 remaining.
With a chance to take the lead,
Lucas Winkler missed two free throws with 1:33 on the clock. Winkler, who finished with 13 points and five rebounds, then fouled out with 40 seconds remaining.
After Fortune couldn't get his shot to fall in the paint with 19 seconds to go, Whitworth's Jerry Twenge scored the game-winner with 1.4 seconds remaining.
Fortune finished with 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Boxers. Blazona had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
