Boxers Fall to Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore.- The Pacific University women's basketball team dropped their regular season finale on Saturday against George Fox.
 
The Bruins was able to find an advantage in the second chance points category outscoring the Boxers 15-5. A perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe in the final quarter also helped them close out the win.

  • Brilie Kovaloff led the Boxers with 14 points in the 34 minutes that she played.
  • Sydney Gray pulled down seven rebounds in the contest.
  • Alexis Intong had six rebounds in the contest with four of them coming on the offensive end.
 
How It Happened
 
It was a slow start for both sides to open up the game. Midway through the opening quarter, the Boxers held a 5-4 lead. With 2:05 remaining in the first quarter, Taya McCallum converted a three to give the Boxers a 10-7 lead. At the end of the first the Boxers held a 14-11 lead.
 
Pacific came out in the second quarter on fire as they went on a 10 -1 run to open a 12-point lead. The Bruins scored eight unanswered points over the next two minutes to make it a two-possession game. At the halftime break, the Boxers held a 26-20 lead.
 
Over the first three minutes and change of the second half, the host Bruins went on a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead. Both teams would fall ice cold as neither team scored for over three minutes from there. The Red and Black would break the drought scoring eight unanswered points capped off by a Hannah Stein three-pointer. Heading into the final quarter, Pacific held a 38-32 lead.
 
George Fox was able to tie the game at 38 apiece with 7:27 remaining in the contest. Neither team would see lead greater than two over the final seven minutes of the game. A Kovaloff jumper with 1:05 remaining would give the Boxers a one-point lead. The ensuing two possessions saw both teams convert jump shots which gave the Boxers a 49-48 lead with 12 seconds remaining. The Bruins were able to draw a foul with one second left and convert both free throws to earn the 50-49 win.

Pacific heads to Walla Walla on Friday, February 24th for the first round of the NWC tournament. The Boxers will face the #2 seeded Puget Sound Loggers in the semifinals that has a scheduled tip of 3 P.M.
