Boxers Conclude Season at WIRA Regatta

The Two days of racing at Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association offered success across all boats. Pacific University raced in four events this weekend: the Varsity 8, the Varsity 4+, the Women's Double, and the Novice 4+.

On Saturday, during the heat, the varsity 8 came down the course in record breaking time for Pacific rowing; 7:50.71. The Boxers finished last in their heat but made it to the Petite finals. This is also the first time a Pacific Crew has made it to the petite finals at WIRA. On Sunday, the Varsity 8 raced in their finals with the rest of the Northwest Conference and finished 5th.

The Women's Double, made of of Chloe Williams and Brooke Fritzler had some technical issues in their heat which landed them in 4th and gave them a spot in the petite finals later that day. After racing twice already on Saturday, The Double's Final was a great race. The double had dog fight down the course with D2 school, Central Oklahoma and made some smart moves to walk on them in the middle thousand. The Double finished in 3rd in tang Petite Final. "It's not where they wanted to end up, but there was some fierce competition out there. It was great to be able to give them an opportunity to shine and they found success in the middle thousand with passing UCO," Head Coach, Charlotte Copp says.

The Varsity 4, coxed by Novice Coxswain Kat Lewis finished 4th in their heat and earned a spot in the petite finals in a large 16 boat field. This was one of the biggest successes of the day. "Having this crew making their way to the petite finals shows that as a whole, our varsity team is growing and improving every day," says Copp. The Boxers finished 6th in their Final on Sunday, after a good race against Arizona State and Puget Sound.

On Saturday, The Novice 4 finished 5th in the heat, getting a spot in the petite finals. 'They rowed extremely well and were sitting up tall and composed at the end of their race. This crew is setting up a really good foundation for the future of Boxer Rowing," Copp Says. The Boxers had an exciting race later on Saturday and finished second in the Petite Final, meaning they were the 8th fastest Novice4, out of 16.

Copp Reflects, "I think this team has found the small successes we need to light a fire to push this team into a new era of Boxer racing. This boat is filled with smart, motivated rowers who, I believe, will transform the speed of Boxer Rowing. WIRA was a great way to end the season"
