Pacific sophomore attends U23 USRowing Selection Development Camp

Abigail Boyer has just one year of competitive rowing experience.

But the incoming Pacific sophomore is already making program history, becoming the first Boxer to be invited to train at USRowing's U23 Selection Development Camp.

"Abbie was a perfect fit for being invited for the Selection Development camp this summer, Pacific head coach Charlotte Copp said. "The Selection Development Camp coaches could see what I see in her potential."

Boyer, who joined the Pacific team last September having never rowed before, spent four weeks at the Washtenaw Rowing Center in Ann Arbor Michigan, participating in 2-3 training sessions per day in both sweep and sculling boats. The camp aimed to give athletes an elite experience with the end goal of racing at USRowing Summer National Championships in Bethel, Ohio on July 13-16.

The camp also gave Boyer the experience to be competitive outside of Pacific rowing as she trained alongside athletes from Division I, II, III  and club programs.

"My favorite part about the camp was working in different sizes and types of boats as well and really strengthening my confidence in the smaller more unstable boats," said Boyer, who was selected for two boats for the USRowing Summer National Championships, the coxed four and the B8+.

Saturday, Boyer's U23 coxed four came in second in the time trial (1900m), finishing in 7 minutes, 6.046 seconds, and her Open 8 placed fifth in 6:30.691. Sunday, Boyer's boats were just outside opportunities to podium, with the 4+ coming in 4th in 7:30.993 and the 8+ placing 5th in 6:48.997.

Looking ahead to the 2023-22 school year, Boyer is coming back to Pacific rowing as one of the top athletes hoping to bring back all she learned from Selection Development Camp to help make the team faster.

"I'm excited to bring back to Pacific all that I've worked on to help make this team not only stronger but also keep up the fantastic team dynamic that our rowing team has created and welcome any and all to try out the sport," she said.

Copp is looking forward to having Boyer back on the team as well.

"I'm so proud of the work Abbie has put to get her invited to Selection Development Camp," Copp said. "She has big dreams and wants to continue to pursue rowing at an elite level. She is an incredible asset for our team at Pacific and it all started with just having the passion for the sport."
