It's not how you start that's important, it's how well you finish.
The Pacific softball team lived out that old adage Sunday. After falling behind 5-0 in the first three innings, the Boxers scored nine unanswered points and carried over that momentum into game two to sweep Warner Pacific 9-5, 12-7 at Sherman/Larkins Stadium in Forest Grove.
The wins were the first for new Pacific head coach Shelly Prochaska.
Game 1
Pacific's offense woke up with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded,
Jenna Wheeler grounded out to first base to score
Ellie Ishikawa from third base.
Kimberly Ray then drove in
Sydney Carter and
Ava Hlavacek with a single to right field.
The Boxers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carter gave Pacific a 6-5 lead with a double to left field, scoring Ishikawa and
Carli Zanassi.
The Boxers added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Pitching in relief,
Abby Surowiec shut out Warner Pacific over 4 2/3 innings to earn the win in the circle. At the plate, Ray was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Game 2
Pacific jumped on the Knights early in game two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Carter was 3-for-4 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI in the victory. Zanassi was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
Karlie Espinoza earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three runs over three innings.
Next, the Boxers host Corban University on Saturday, Feb. 17 in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
