Boxers split with Puget Sound to open conference play

TACOMA, Wash. -- Pacific opened conference play Friday afternoon with an 8-3 win at Puget Sound. But the Boxers couldn't quite carry over that momentum into game two of the doubleheader, suffering a 9-8 loss. 

Game 1

In the circle, Pacific pitchers Haleigh Colfelt and Kiara Baba combined to shut down the Loggers. Colfelt earned the win, holding Puget Sound to four hits and two earned runs over the first three innings. Baba then allowed just one hit and one run with four strikeouts through four innings.

The Boxers scored four runs in the top of the second inning, three in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth. 

Kimberly Ray was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI to lead Pacific at the plate. Michelle Winfield went 2-for-3 with two walks, two stolen bases, a run and an RBI. Faith Lawson was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run and an RBI. Sydney Carter was 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases. 

Game 2

The Boxers quickly played from behind in game two after Puget Sound scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. 

However, Pacific answered with three runs in the top of the second, one run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.

The Boxers held on to an 8-7 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but Puget Sound scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, winning the game on a walk-off single to left field. 

Winfield was 1-for-2 with two walks, a home run and three RBIs. Lawson was 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases. Kayla Kodani had a double, a stolen base and scored two runs for Pacific.

Next, the Boxers play two more games at Puget Sound on Saturday beginning at noon.
