WHITTIER, Calif. – A career night by
Anthony Hrboka wasn't enough to lead the Pacific men's basketball team to its first win of the season.
The Pacific junior scored 30 points Monday in a 101-78 loss at Whittier.
The Boxers went on a 10-0 run to lead 27-20 midway through the first half. But Whittier responded with a 10-0 run of its own to take the lead for good with 7:18 remaining in the first half. The Poets extended their advantage to 25 points, 79-54, with 11:58 remaining in the game.
Pacific shot 50 percent from the field in the first half but just 35.9 in the second. Whittier shot 61.3 percent in the first half and heated up to 69.6 in the second. For the game, the Poets finished 13-for-27 from 3 and made 18 of 20 free throws. Pacific went 5-for-14 from both 3 and the free throw line. The Boxers made just 1 of 8 free throws in the first half.

Ryder Mackay had 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior
Brody Baumgartner added 10 points and six rebounds.
Hrboka's 30-point performance came after he scored 28 points Saturday in an 80-73 loss to Occidental. Hrboka scored 11 straight points, including three 3-pointers, to get the Boxers within 62-61 with 6:40 remaining in the game. But Pacific faded down the stretch in the non-conference loss.
The Boxers finished 0-3 in California, opening the road trip with a 108-80 loss at Redlands. Pacific junior
Max Vacco had 20 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. Hrboka posted 16 points and seven assists. Mackay recorded 16 points and six rebounds. Junior
Romyn Johnson added 10 points off the bench.
Next: Pacific returns home to play Northwest Indian College Friday at 8 p.m. in the Ken Schumann Classic.
