Boxers fall at home to Puget Sound

With three players scoring in double-digits, the Pacific men's basketball team got a spark from its bench.

But the 40 total bench points weren't enough to defeat Puget Sound as the Boxers fell 81-76 Saturday afternoon inside the Stoller Center.

Drew Gumin scored 13 points to lead Pacific. Anthony Gehring recorded 12 points and Lucas Gray added 10 points.

Pacific senior Devin Fortune posted his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 17 rebounds.

The Boxers got off to a hot start, racing out to a 14-4 lead and led by as many as 14 points before Puget Sound tied the game at 31-31 and then took its first advantage, 33-31, with 3:22 remaining.

After the Loggers extended their lead to seven points early in the second half, a Gumin 3-pointer tied the game at 51-51 with 12:40 to go. Gehring then knocked down two free throws to give Pacific the lead with 11:27 remaining.

But Puget Sound grabbed a 67-65 advantage with 2:46 to go and never trailed again.

Both teams struggled at the free throw line in the final 20 seconds. The Boxers went 2-for-6 while the Loggers made 4 of 8.

With the loss, Pacific dropped to 5-7 in the Northwest Conference after starting the season 3-1.

Next: The Boxers play at Whitworth on Friday, Feb. 14.
